Miranda Kamal - Part 1

Season 2, Episode 20 - Listen to your best coach

Miranda Kamal is a daughter, sister and wife. She’s an entrepreneur, a former competitive boxer, and International Boxing Association 2 star boxing coach.

She’s the Head Coach and Executive Director of Mentoring Junior Kids Organization (MJKO) which she founded in 2010 with her now husband, Ibrahim “Firearm” Kamal, a former eight-time Canadian National Boxing Champion.

Her work is predominantly with young people in South Parkdale, some of whom have been a part of MJKO since its inception. They have grown up in MJKO’s programs dealing with hardship from the threat of immigration deportations and food insecurity to drugs, gangs and homelessness. In some cases, they have become mentors to others in their community. MJKO is a part of the village that has helped and continues to help raise these young people. But it’s never been easy.

  • There was a short film created about Miranda’s journey as a boxer, The Fight in Me.

  • Resilience Is is also a great short film created for the Resilience Strategy at the City of Toronto and MJKO is featured. It is available on YouTube or on the MJKO website: https://www.mjko.ca
